Last nights meeting was a Zoom talk by Mathew Browne on ‘The Art of Travel Photography’.

After telling us a little about himself, and his photographic journey, Mathew addressed the definition of Travel photography and the need to be a ‘Jack of All Trades’ because it can cover so many different themes – landscape, architecture, street and night photography etc. He also demonstrated how lucky we are positionally in the world to be able to easily access so many different countries and cultures.

Mathew, using his images to support the information he was giving us, then took us through his step by step process when he is going on a photographic trip. Forward planning is essential. Not just the places you want to visit and the types of shots that you want to take but also the trip itself. Check your flightpath and book seats that are likely to have the best opportunities for window seat pictures. Or if going by sea decide whether port or starboard is your best option for likely images. And once you get to your destination you will need to have booked a room with a view.

Decide what locations you want to use and do your research including their policy on cameras and tripods. Be aware of seasonal events like Christmas and New Year, Chinese New Year etc. Cultural events can be ideal for people and street shots. And don’t forget astronomical events like the Northern Lights.

Mathew talked about using different perspectives with different angles, framing techniques and abstract images. He also showed how bad weather can be utilised rather than be an obstruction. He emphasised the value of scouting – doing a recce – to decide the what, where, how and when that will give you the best image. He emphasised the value of patience and also of luck. Sometimes you will have to wait a while to get just the right shot but conversely it’s always wise to have your camera with you in case an unexpected opportunity presents itself.

He included information about some useful apps, including one that he and some friends have created called Photohound which will give you all the information you will need on any specific place and will accept your comments to add to the data. He concluded his talk with a section on editing techniques

Mathew’s talk was very informative and I am sure it was especially appreciated by the regular travellers amongst us. Although as he said at the beginning of his talk, ‘travelling could just be going to the next town’, so we could all appreciate his tips.
