On Wednesday evening we met for our Challenge Evening, ‘I Tried Something Different’. We brought in images on a memory stick of attempts at a new genre or a new technique we had tried – whether it had worked or not.

Several people brought in their macro/close up images with insects as a popular subject. Hornets, ladybirds, butterflies, dragonflies, moths, millipedes, spiders, bees and flies all made their appearance.

Others tried out new ideas for processing, creating interesting abstract images, and using blurring or multiple images as well as showing how different a picture can look if changed to mono or even simply cropped to create the best image. We saw demonstrations of how an image can be altered in mood and appearance as well as how a train can be ‘moved’ from a museum to an eerie moonlit journey.

Some people had tried a new genre for the first time – portrait and street photography for instance. Or maybe night photography or still life subjects. And we also saw images taken through windows (wet and frosty), ‘shoot through’ images, reflections and pictures taken against a background of many fluorescent lights. It was apparent that even the most experienced photographers could still find something new to try.
